What was once a bumpy, dusty airstrip – hacked out of a wheat field in the early 1900s – has become one of the busiest airports in the Los Angeles County Airport System. In fact, as early as November 1911, C.P. Rogers landed his Wright biplane very near the present Brackett Airport just before completing the first transcontinental flight when the history of powered aircraft was only eight years old. The area has been used for a landing field almost continuously since that time. An actual “airport” was constructed in 1940 after James N. Long and Kenneth Brooks, operators of the former Pomona Airport, leased ~50 acres of land from the Base Line Water Co. in La Verne. They gouged a 2,600-ft runway out of wheat fields and constructed a hangar with adjoining offices to serve as a training ground for students pilots from nearby Pomona College. Brackett Airport was actually named after Dr. Frank Parkhurst Brackett, an original Pomona College faculty member and flying enthusiast.
Prior to WWII, hundreds of young college men were given premilitary flight training at Brackett Field under the Civilian Pilot Training Program. During the war years, Brackett was the only Los Angeles County airport allowed to continue operations, largely because it served as the base of operations for the Civil Air Patrol. Interestingly, as a security measure, the Department of Defense, who had authority over the airport during the war, mandated that all private planes be dismantled and the parts stored at least seven miles apart from each other. In September 1947, the County’s Regional Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors take the necessary steps to acquire land in the eastern part of the County to develop a major County-owned airport for that growing location.

Recent History
Brackett Field is a public airport located one mile (2 km) southwest of La Verne, in Los Angeles County, California, USA. It was named after Dr. Frank Parkhurst Brackett (1865–1951). Brackett, located about an hour east of the studios in Hollywood, California, has been used for location filming of scenes for a number of TV series and movies. These include Wings of Fire, Airport 1975, Spencer's Pilots (CBS, 1974–1975) The Tim Conway Show and others. Actor Kent McCord worked for a Fixed Base Operator on the north side of Brackett in the late 1950s. The field was also the starting point of the Powder Puff Derby in 1974. Brackett originally had only one runway (26 / 8), which was paved and had paved taxiways, one on each side. The control tower was built in the late 1960s. In the 1980s, increased traffic (due to the loss of other general aviation airports in the area to urban encroachment) led to the northern taxiway being replaced by a second runway (26R / 8L), which forced the relocation of the control tower a few feet to the north. Most of the development of the field prior to the 1980s was on the south side, where the Administration Building ("Ad Building") is located. These developments included a Cessna dealership, flying schools and other facilities such as the first metal hangars on the field. A large, wooden hangar was built on the north side of the field, to house such operations as a Piper dealership and aircraft repair. The hangar burned down circa 1960, was rebuilt, then burned down again about 10 years later, was again rebuilt, then demolished a few years after that to make way for more modern facilities. Since the 1960s, Brackett has been the home base of Civil Air Patrol Squadron 64.
