Product Information

Just ID'd as:
82nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Group
82st TFS, 71st TRG
Hi Brian,

This Disney design was for the 82nd TFS (Tactical Fighter Squadron) of the 71st TRG (Tactical Reconnaissance Group). It depicts the varied tasks carried out by the squadron, bombing (bomb under the arm) & fighter role (Tommy Gun under the arm  & photo recognisance (Camera) recognisance ( binoculars),

The squadron operated in  New Guinea initially flying P-39 Bell Air Cobras along with the 110th TFS ‘Lindburghs own’ ( Patch has a mule in a blue circle). Their most famous pilot was William Shomo, Congressional Medal Of Honor (CMOH) recipient for shooting down 6 Japanese aircraft in a recon sortie in a P-51, “Snooks 5”.  This aircraft was destroyed.  His next aircraft “Snooks 6th” was renamed  “The flying Undertaker”.

My interest in the 71st TRG, and in particular the 82nd TRS, stems from being a volunteer with the Fighter collection at Duxford, who had an original 82nd P39 restored to flying condition called "Brooklyn Bum 2", flown by Peter McDermott. I spoke to Peter McDermott a few years ago and he did not recall the unit being called the "Straffin’ Saints" while he flew with the unit. He was rotated back to the US when the squadron received the Mustangs as he had no tail dragger experience.

I believe the name and Disney character art work came about because a member of the unit knew or was related to somebody at Disney.

I hope this helps.  If you ever receive another of the straffin’ Saint patches please let me know.

Sadly for TFC the P-39 was sold back to the states and is now based in Texas, but at least she is flying again

Thanks, Regards
Russell Swann
